Sample of Naming System notes

Vietnamese

There are only about twenty-five common family names in use in Vietnam. Traditionally the family name comes first, then a two part personal name although many people in the UK are now putting their family name last. Most women take their husband’s personal name rather than his family name. Children usually take their father’s family name. Siblings usually use kinship terms to address each other.

Names are often not gender specific. The middle name may be generational and shared by all of the siblings. In Vietnam, people may address each other as Mr/Mrs followed by the personal name so it is always worth recording which is which.
